New Year’s Eve: Planning Your Party

There are the two main points and disservices to arranging a New Years Eve party in your home. The most favorable circumstances to arranging a New Year’s Eve party in your house is that you have a more flexibility. You make the refreshment decisions, decoration choices and even the kind of activities you can offer. The negatives to facilitating a New Years Eve get-together in your house is that your property or belonging might be harmed by the visitors. You are in charge of the cleanup and it can be hard to control when visitors leave the gathering.

new year's eve

Factors to Consider

When hosting your own New Year’s Eve get-together, don’t need to stress over cleanup. The weaknesses to facilitating your New Years Eve gathering in your home is that you will be constrained to your current surroundings. There might be a few confinements set on the excitement. Additionally, there will likely be restriction on the drinks you can offer your visitors. Giving these points of interest and drawbacks and the expenses related with facilitating a New Years Eve gathering in an eatery or providing food corridor, many individuals pick to have their New Years Eve get-together in your home.

Another factor to consider when planning a New Years Eve party in your home is how you plan to entertain your guests. Hiring a band or DJ or playing your own music is one of the most popular entertainment options for a New Years Eve party. If you plan to have a band or a DJ you should consider providing a dance floor for your guests. The dance floor does not have to be big. But it should be large enough for at least some of your guests to dance and have a good time.

Additional entertainment options are showing a series of movies. The movies can follow a particular theme. Or they can just be fun movies you think the majority of your guests will enjoy. If you are planning to entertain your guests in this manner you should consider renting a movie projector. This will make the movie viewing experience more pleasurable. You should also consider seating options. Ensure you have enough seating for each guest with an unrestricted view of the screen.

Finally, another factor to consider when planning a New Years Eve party in your home is how you plan to deal with potential problems such as spilled food and drinks. If you have new and expensive carpeting or flooring, you might be very concerned about this issue. One option is to take preventative measures by covering flooring which would be permanently damaged by spilled drinks or food. This will likely not be very attractive. Many guests prefer to only offer food and drinks in areas of the home where spills will not be extremely damaging. As the host of the party, you should be prepared to deal with spills. Your plan could include cleaning all spills thoroughly as they occur.

White Christmas (full lyrics)

[Verse 1]
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

[Verse 2]
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
“May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white”

Silent Night (full lyrics)

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

frosty the snowman

Frosty the Snowman (full lyrics)

Frosty the Snowman, was a jolly happy soul,
With a corn cob pipe and a button nose, and two eyes made of coal.

Frosty the Snowman, is a fairy tale, they say.
He was made of snow, but the children know he came to life one day.

There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found,
For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around!

Oh, Frosty, the Snowman, was alive as he could be;
and the children say he could laugh and play,
just the same as you and me.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (full lyrics)

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles
Will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the Yuletide gay
Next year all our troubles
Will be miles away

Once again as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Will be near to us, once more

Someday soon we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then we’ll to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us, once more

Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough, oh
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now, ooh

Staying Healthy During the Holidays

The holidays are a time for family, friends, laughter and love. Unfortunately, it also tends to be a time for colds, the flu, and winter sickness. Cold weather can bring on some powerful germs, and with so much traveling, it’s easy to catch a bug that may be floating around. To increase your odds of staying healthy this holiday season, follow these tips to avoid potential sickness.

Staying Healthy This Winter

First and foremost, you are what you eat. If you eat healthy, you’ll have a much better chance of remaining healthy. While sitting to a particular diet might be difficult thanks to all the Christmas cookies, figgy-pudding and other holiday goodies, it’s not impossible. Be sure to eat foods that are high in vitamin C, which will help keep your immune system strong. This includes items like fruits and vegetables. Also be sure to include plenty of lean meats, fish, poultry, low-fat dairy, wholegrains, and nuts.

In addition to eating healthy, don’t forget about exercise. Just 30 minutes a day can drastically improve your health and lower your chances of contracting illness. But, be cautious. You also don’t want to over-exercise. This can lead to a weaker immune system throughout the winter.

Don’t Stress

While the holidays can be a stressful time, don’t let it overwhelm you. Control your stress levels this winter and mitigate your stressors to support your immune system. Be sure to make time for yourself and avoid overcommitting to social engagements. Sometimes it’s difficult to say “no” to fun events, but rest and recuperation is essential for a healthy body.

Along with stress, be conscious of your sleep cycles. Lack of sleep can lead to increases in stress and weaker immune systems. If you feel you’re coming down with something, get some rest–it strengthens the immune response. Before you fall asleep, let yourself relax with some soothing music. Put away your cell phones and mobile devices, and let yourself disconnect.

Wash Your Hands

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it 1000 times—wash your hands! It’s no secret that consistently washing your hands can help prevent the spread of germs and decrease your likelihood of infection. This is particularly important during winter season when we tend to cough and sneeze more frequently. Soak your hands and lather up with soap for 20 seconds to help dislodge germs and rinse well under running water. In addition to your hands, don’t forget about cleansing the rest of your body. Be sure to bath regularly, and wash your face each night before bed.

By following each of these tips, you can increase your likelihood of staying healthy this winter. If you’re still concerned, you may want to consider getting a flu shot. Of course, the decision whether or not to get a flu shot is controversial but personal. Everyone needs to consider all the information and risks and decide for themselves. Lastly, if it’s cold outside, wear a jacket! Yes, that seems self-explanatory but you’d be surprised. Bundle up, and enjoy your holiday!

Christmas Trees: How to Find the Perfect Tree

It’s almost Christmas time in San Antonio and you know what they means; it’s time to deck the halls! For many, one of the very first holiday decorations that is put up is the christmas tree. While almost anything in the home could be covered in reds and greens, a large amount of emphasis is always placed on the Christmas tree itself. Before you can begin decorating, you’ll have to narrow down your options between the numerous Christmas trees that are available today. And of course, there are so many things to think about when choosing a tree. Do you want real tree or an artificial tree? Should you buy pre-lit or plain? Take a look at our guide that covers everything Christmas trees.

Christmas Trees: How to Choose

As already mentioned, there are two basic options to choose from to begin your search for the right Christmas tree. Artificial or real? Both have their own unique characteristics and benefits. For starters, with a real tree, you’ll experience that authentic Christmas feeling. You’ll also enjoy the smell of evergreen. But whose to say that you can’t light your favorite evergreen candle and still enjoy an artificial tree? Additionally, with a real tree comes real maintenance and care. It will need to be consistently watered and cared for, and you may notice parts of the tree begin to fall to the ground. With an artificial tree, you get to be maintenance-free, but you can still enjoy the same great appearance you would have with a real tree.

In the end, however, half the fun with choosing a Christmas tree might come from going with family to chop down a tree together.

Yet another factor to consider is size. Of course, you will often be limited by the size of your home. If you have 8 or 9 foot ceilings, your tree must be shorter to fit properly. If height is not an issue, another aspect to consider is how wide the tree is. Do you prefer a skinny tree or a round tree? Before making any of these decisions, you’ll want to measure the size of the area where you plan to place your tree. Be sure to measure the width and the height, and then don’t forget to take a tape measure along when you go to pick out your tree.

If you’ve decided to go with an artificial tree, you’ll have another important decision to make. Pre-lit or plain? And if the tree is pre-lit, will the lights be colored or white? While this may not seem like a huge decision, you’d be surprised by the significance that some place on light color. On the other hand, if you’ve decided to go with a real tree, you’ll still have to choose. Or, you can choose to use no lights at all.

In the end, deciding on the perfect Christmas tree can be a big decision for many families. If you can’t come to a compromise, here’s our best word of advice: get more than one tree.

Happy Holidays, everybody!

Texas Tailgates: Tips and Tricks

Everyone knows that in Texas, football is a religion. And what goes hand-in-hand with football games? Tailgating, of course. Watching a football game is nothing short of a rite of passage in the USA. But the badge of honor doesn’t simply come from knowing when your team scores a touchdown or stupidly punts on the fourth down. It’s about more: the perfect pregame chili, the ultimate Mimosa or Bloody Mary, the team-colored desserts, decorations and dedication. Planning and executing the perfect tailgate is no easy task. But, if you follow these tips, you’ll be on the right track to becoming a Texas tailgate expert.

tailgate party

Tips for Tailgates

The first thing to keep in mind when it comes to planning a tailgate is location. Where exactly are you going to spend the time before and after the game? That might seem like an obvious question, but these plots can sell out long before the season starts. If you’re tailgating IRL, I cannot advise you enough: Reserve your territory. Although, if you’re tailgating from your couch, you’re in good shape. Be sure to keep things simple. If you want to relax in your insignia emblazoned folding chair, plan no more than one or two foods that will require on-site cooking or special care.

Not only that, but plan ahead. Chop, slice, and assemble whatever you can at home. Put it all in waterproof zip-top plastic bags or those handy plastic tubs from the deli, which stack neatly and take up minimal room in coolers. The more you pack in disposable containers, the less you’ll have to lug home or clean. When possible, use several smaller containers, rather than one large one, so you can take only as much as you need out of the cooler and keep the rest cold.

If you want to look like you know what you’re doing at your tailgate, team-colored everything is a must. Decor and setup go hand in hand. Don’t buy a white tent if down the road you’re going to want team colors. Just sit yourself down and admit that you don’t want to be the one weirdo who didn’t invest heavily in color-coordination, and put those team-themed plates, silverware, cups, tablecloths and chocolate-covered candies on the credit card.

The most important aspect of any successful tailgate is your menu—both food and drinks. Whether you’re team Bloody Mary or whisky over ice, a well-stocked bar will make your tailgate. For a Bloody Mary bar, you’ll need: tomato juice or Bloody Mary mix, Worcestershire sauce, vodka, pickles, more pickles, all the pickles, pepper and vinegar-based hot sauce. Oh, and don’t forget the beer. In terms of food, every tailgate has its go-to food: hotdogs, hamburgers, chili, chips, etc. Big games require snacks because you’ll need fuel for the whole day. Round out your menu with make-ahead or ready-to eat fare that can be served at room temperature. Think cornbread, cookies, veggies, chips, and dip. Bonus points for finger foods: They minimize the need for utensils.

While these are just the basics, a successful tailgate is only truly successful when you add your own personal touch. Have fun with it! Remember, your team can lose the game, but you can never lose a tailgate.

Safety Basics for Trick-or-Treating in San Antonio

Halloween can be fun for everyone, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t dangers lurking in the night. This Halloween, don’t forget these safety basics:

  • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds
  • If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you
  • Agree on a specific time children should return home
  • Teach your children to never enter a stranger’s home or car
  • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends
  • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home
  • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant
  • Avoid masks, which can obstruct vision
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks
  • When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first
  • Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation

Safety Tips for Motorists and those Welcoming Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween safety is not only important for those participating in trick-or-treating in San Antonio. Safety should also be a main concern for motorists and those welcoming trick-or-treaters to their home on Halloween night. Follow these tips to ensure safety for everyone:

  • Sweep leaves from your sidewalks and steps.
  • Clear your porch or front yard of obstacles someone could trip over.
  • Restrain your pets.
  • Light the area well so the young visitors can see.
  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
  • At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
  • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween

Halloween Decorations

Halloween is definitely a holiday that people either go all out for or they do very little. Whichever way you tend to lean, it’s a fun excuse for adults to decorate like children and try to spook the pants off their household and/or their neighbors. Maybe you’re interested in creating your very own haunted house this year. Or maybe this is the year ghouls and goblins will tremble at (and inside) your doors. If this is the year you’re hosting the spookiest haunted house party the neighborhood has ever seen, here are some ideas to get you going.

Utilize the great outdoors as a Halloween decoration

First, consider making a big leaf pile…and then, hide a surprise inside. If you have trees in your yard, it’s a great idea to rake those leaves together into a big pile before trick-or-treaters arrive. If nothing else, you can put up a small sign encouraging kids to jump in the leaf pile. After all, there are few things more fun than a running jump into a giant leaf pile.

On the other hand, you can take advantage of the leaf pile to plan a fun surprise for some of the older children (and even the adults). Shortly before trick-or-treaters come out, bury an older child or a grown-up in a leaf pile that’s fairly close to the sidewalk. Give them a little bit of room to watch who is coming. When a big kid or adult is walking by, the person in the leaf pile can jump out and give them a good, old-fashioned fright. Bonus points if the person in the leaf pile is dressed like a zombie or something scary.

Make your own Halloween decorations

Ever wanted to cover the front of your house in spiderweb patterns? Garbage bags are actually perfect for this. You can easily make a giant spiderweb out of a garbage bag or two for just a few pennies. Just cut off the drawstring along the top, then cut one side and the bottom edge, so that you have a giant sheet of plastic garbage bag material. Then, fold it in half over and over again until you have a small “wedge” shape. Tape together the side that isn’t a fold, then cut some large pieces out of the plastic with some sharp scissors, like you would do with a snowflake. When you’re done, unfold it and you’ll have a giant black or white spiderweb.

Another good idea is to hang simple ghosts for your front tree can be made out of anything. Lightly colored bedsheets are perhaps the best option for this. All you need is an old sheet, a soccer ball or basketball, some fishing line and a needle.

Take advantage of the candy bowl

One classic trick is to simply go to a craft store or a party supply store and buy a big plastic spider for a dollar or two. Take that spider and put it in the bottom of a big bowl that you use for candy. Next, pour the treats on top. As children start taking the treats during the trick-or-treat night, they’ll eventually uncover the spider and get a good fright. You can repeat the trick by just adding a few more treats to the bowl. Then, cover the spider up again. This is a great “mild” trick that’s a lot of fun, even for children.

All of these tricks and treats cost just pennies (or a few dollars at most) to make. For such a low cost, they can add a ton of Halloween flavor to your trick-or-treat night in San Antonio.

Finding a Job in San Antonio

Unless you are one of the lucky few who works in a high-demand career, finding a new job can be a challenging and frustrating experience. This is especially true if you are relocating to a new area, such as San Antonio. You can make the job-search a bit easier on yourself if you use proactive strategies for finding a new job. Of course, the traditional approach to finding a new job has been to look out for advertisements for roles you fancy. However, there are other ways you can go about securing that ideal new role. Finding a job in San Antonio, or anywhere, can be challenge—follow these tips to help you get started.

finding a job in san antonio

Utilize Job Websites

A large number of internet job sites and job boards now exist such as Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Monster, The Muse, and FlexJobs to name just a few. Typically these include lists of vacancies that you can apply for in the traditional manner. However, they also allow you to post your resume and other details so that employers and recruitment agencies can search for suitable candidates.

Get to know the sites that employers and recruitment agencies in your business sector look at, and then post your resume. When finding a job in San Antonio, pay special attention to job boards in your preferred sector. For example, if you’re into tech, then technology-focused job boards such as Dice should be your go-to site. And don’t forget Craigslist which is always jam-packed with jobs in your area.

Reach out to a Recruiter

Contact a number of recruitment agencies, ensure they have your resume and other details, explain to them what you are looking for in terms of your next role, and keep in regular contact with them so they know you are working on finding a job in San Antonio.

Ideally, the agencies you register with would be a combination of those that specialize in your business sector and larger agencies who might handle a greater number of vacancies. Agencies that specialize in your business sector can advise you on ways you can make yourself more employable.

Get Involved in Networking

For the vast majority of job-seekers, a large and strong network of contacts—of people who know you and want to help you uncover job leads—results in more job opportunities. Networking—in person and online—is essential to your job-search success. Continually seek out new people to add to your network.

A number of websites focus on building work-based contacts, such as LinkedIn. You can send invitations to people you’d like to become a part of your network. If they accept your invitation, you can then send messages to them at any time. In addition, you don’t need to keep up-to-date with the career moves of your contacts, as their profile will follow them around from job-to-job. You’ll also be able to post your resume and other details, and allow other users to search for your profile.

Set Goals for Yourself

Attempt to complete several job-related goals daily. It’s a bit of a cliche now, but in all cliches there is truth. And that truth is that it takes a great deal of time and effort to find a new job. In a long job-search, it’s easy to get discouraged and distracted. By focusing on achieving daily goals you can motivate yourself while also building a foundation for success.

In the end, don’t get discouraged as you continue your search for finding a job in San Antonio. With just a little hard work and perseverance, you’ll find the right career for you. Soon, you’ll be a part of the local San Antonio business market.

Garage Doors and Home Renovation

If you are refinancing your San Antonio property, or you are in the middle of a sale or mortgage loan, you need to do your best to ensure that you get a high appraisal value for your home. One very good way of achieving that is to build a detached or attached garage in your home if it doesn’t have one. Almost everyone who wants to buy a home places great value on the garage.  Good garage doors and home renovation will boost the market value of your home tremendously.

garage doors

An appraisal is a very significant part of selling your home. If you want to refinance your home, mortgage lenders will require that you to have at least twenty percent equity for your property. Likewise, if your home appraisal doesn’t have a high value, then you might not reach that required 20% equity. Or if you plan to sell any of your property, then you will need the property to be appraised at the price you’re asking for. But, if that does not happen, then you will have problems with the mortgage money lending for possible buyers.

The value of your garage doors

As regarding garage doors, your home value is determined by some factors. Appraisers will look at the prices of the homes nearby and they will evaluate how they have changed throughout the years. They will also consider factors like neighborhood, style, condition and size of your home.  Additionally, they will evaluate the improvements that you have made to your home. You will need to make your home as attractive and valuable as possible to a high number of buyers if you want great results. If you have a garage, you should consider getting a new one so it will look so new and fresh thereby increasing the value of your home.

How much does new garage doors or a garage add to the value of your home? In so many ways this can add thousands of dollars worth of value to your home. But remember that this majorly applies to you adding an entire garage. In almost all cases, you adding a new garage door can increase the value of your home by over 75%. The recapture rate is fairly high. Changing your garage door is very practicable and will make your home look more refreshed than it was before.

How can you upgrade your garage doors?

Have you ever looked at your home and wondered how to add windows to the garage doors? If you have a standard windowless garage door and are looking to upgrade, it might interest you to know that decorative windows are among the many garage door replacement options offered by garage door installation companies. Windows give life to your garage door. They make your garage door stand out from the rest. They can improve curb appeal and make your entire home feel more inviting.

Garage doors are one of the most important impressions by which your home will be judged. A great garage door will always increase the resale value of your home. A peeling or damaged garage door will make your home less appealing. Good garage doors always have a wonderful effect on the overall value of a home. No matter the steps you take at the end, a replacement and renovation of your garage door is highly valuable.
